Skye DVC Project: Pioneering Safety for Deer and Drivers on Skye
The Skye DVC Project is a pilot initiative aimed at tackling the pressing issue of Deer Vehicle Collisions (DVCs) on Skye. This project is a testament to BDS’s commitment to protecting both deer and drivers on one of the island’s busiest roads.
Key Objectives of the Skye DVC Project:
- Raising Awareness: Our primary goal is to ignite public awareness about DVCs, encouraging people to think about solutions and get involved in addressing this critical issue.
- Community Engagement: We are creating opportunities for members and supporters to participate in tangible activities, fostering a sense of community involvement and collaboration.
- Data Collection: By collaborating with deer managers and stalkers, we aim to pilot innovative data recording approaches to better understand and mitigate DVCs.
- Building Partnerships: Establishing and nurturing positive relationships with estates and other local partners.
- Influencing Behaviour: Our efforts aim to influence driver awareness and behaviour, ultimately reducing the incidence of DVCs.
- Making a Difference: Our ultimate goal is to significantly improve safety for both deer and drivers on Skye’s busiest road.
Scott MacKenzie from the Fearnan Eilean Iarmain estate shared his thoughts on the collaboration:
“We at Fearnan Eilean Iarmain are delighted to be working collaboratively with the BDS on this important project. If through the work we deliver together, we can act as a starting point to share our learning for other people to consider their options in terms of reducing RTAs, then that must be a positive thing. Our goal is to target driver behaviour and awareness as opposed to the default position of simply reducing the deer numbers, which can only be a positive thing from a welfare and safety perspective.”
The BDS Highlands Branch will be at the Moy Game Fair on the 2nd and 3rd of August and this event provides an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about the Skye DVC Project and how you can get involved.
Join us in this crucial endeavour as we work together to protect both wildlife and people’s lives on the Isle of Skye.
