Welcoming Rhian Tyne: New Assistant Training Officer at the British Deer Society

The British Deer Society is delighted to introduce Rhian Tyne as our new Assistant Training Officer, and we are confident that she will be a dynamic addition to the team. With a rich background in wildlife conservation and a deep commitment to deer management, Rhian brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role and we look forward to the invaluable contributions she is set to make in her capacity as the Assistant Training Officer.

Rhian’s Role and Responsibilities:

As the Assistant Training Officer, Rhian will collaborate closely with our Head of Training, Nick Rout, to enhance BDS training and development initiatives. Playing a pivotal role, she will identify and address training needs within the Society. Rhian’s primary objectives include devising and delivering training courses in accordance with awarding body accreditation criteria and undertaking Assessor training.

Experience:

Rhian has dedicated her work to the wildlife sector, most recently taking on the role as a Trainee Wildlife Ranger with Forestry England Central District. Between January 2022 and February 2024, she actively engaged in wildlife conservation projects, conducted deer culling, and collaborated with foresters to protect species and habitats during woodland activities. However, before this she already had valuable experience in the industry including time at Braeroy, a traditional Highland sporting estate, where she worked alongside professional stalkers and contributed to various aspects of deer management.

Passionate and Dedicated:

At the age of 14 Rhian earned her DSC1 qualification, a notable accomplishment as it made her one of the youngest individuals in the country ever to achieve this feat. Her commitment to deer has also been highlighted by an active role in establishing a park herd of fallow deer on her parents’ farm, and by her appearances on the Welsh language TV channel S4C where she advocated for venison and imparted valuable information about deer management. Rhian’s drive, enthusiasm and passion for wildlife, and especially deer and their management, makes her a valuable addition to the BDS team.

The BDS is confident that Rhian’s diverse experiences and unwavering passion for wildlife conservation and deer management will bring significant contributions to our charity and the training team in particular.
