The DSC1 is the foundation of deer skills development.

To be awarded the Deer Stalking Certificate 1, you must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:

General Knowledge of the 6 species of deer found in Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Deer legislation
Ballistics
Deer identification
Safety
Shooting
Large Game – knowledge of the inspection of carcasses and the legal requirements

Rifles: A rifle legal for shooting deer in the UK is required for the shooting assessment. Any candidate who wishes to borrow a BDS Club rifle may legally borrow one free of charge under the BDS Gun Club rules. To be eligible to borrow a rifle you must be a member of the BDS and will be asked to complete a Section 21 Declaration Form, unless a valid FAC is held.

FAC holders must have their certificates with them so they are able to sign the range register and therefore be able to comply with society rules and regulations.

OPTIONAL Lantra Wild Game Meat Hygiene Assessment - Can only be booked with a DSC1 Course.
A Lantra nationally recognised qualification in Wild Game Meat Hygiene. The law requires anyone who supplies game meat to a game dealer to be a trained person by taking the Lantra Level 2 assessment will demonstrate to game meat dealers or potential employers that you ensure wild game meat is safe to enter the food chain. The qualification will demonstrate you are competent in this area to the satisfaction of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Training for the Lantra Wild Game Meat Hygiene Assessment is included in the DSC1 three day course.
