Learn more about UK Deer
You can access all of the societies’ advice on deer through our app.
This is the perfect app for anyone who loves or is interested in UK deer. Whether you are a novice finding out about deer in the UK or an expert in deer identification, the BDS UK Deer app is for you.
With this app, you can learn more about each species of deer living in the UK and view the maps from our recent deer surveys to find out which species live in your area.
UK DEER RECORDING APP
The BDS Deer App is currently undergoing an extensive rebuild. We hope to relaunch the app in 2025. If you’d like to be the first to know when the new app goes live, please sign up to our email newsletter, ‘Deerbytes’ using the form below.
REPORT A SIGHTING
You can take part in ongoing BDS deer research by reporting all your deer sightings. Whether you are spotting deer in the countryside or urban deer in your back garden we want to know about them.
Use the app to instantly report your sighting so we can get a much better picture of where deer are in the UK. Select the species and the app will automatically log the location of your phone. If you want to report your sighting from a different location then simply toggle off the auto location option to add a different one manually.
Then just add the number of deer you see, select an observation from the list, and confirm your sighting.
You can also add additional notes to your sighting if you wish. These can include more details on a deer group including age and sex.
Lastly why not take a quick photo and include this with your sighting report.
Not sure of the deer species? No problem as the app includes a helpful Q and A tool to assist with identification. Don’t worry if you are still not certain, the important thing is to record the sighting and then add extra details within the notes and a photo if you can. Our experts can then check and in most cases confirm the species.
You can also use the app to report deer involved in vehicle collisions, which helps with identifying accident hot spots and high-risk areas to ultimately improve road safety.
If you are a stalker, you too can help by keeping us updated with your cull numbers to give us more data on active deer management in the UK.
All the reports are stored securely and the report senders privacy is protected under our GDPR and privacy protocols.
How the data is used
Deer reports submitted to the British Deer Society are used purely to enable us to maintain an accurate picture of deer distribution and trends across the UK.
We deliberately publish our public maps identifying deer presence by 10 x 10km squares to avoid identifying specific locations, and the individual sightings sent to us are held subject to strict Data Protection protocols.
