WHAT WE DO
The British Deer Society [BDS] is a charity that operates throughout the UK dedicated to educating and inspiring everyone about deer.
Through our education and research, we raise awareness about wild deer and the issues surrounding them. We provide training to actively ensure deer can be managed humanely and safely to the very highest of standards.
We want to ensure wild deer in the UK are respected and valued while being kept healthy and at sustainable numbers, so they can benefit biodiversity and the wider environment.

Deer as a Resource for Early Clothing
In early civilizations, deer hides were used to make clothing, shelter, and tools. The softness of their leather made it a highly prized material for garments, while antlers and bones were carved into tools and weapons. 🦌

Deer Trivia: Sleeping
When completely relaxed a deer may lie with its head stretched out and chin resting on the ground, or curled up with the head resting on its forelegs. Some occasionally lie flat on their sides.
Most sleep is little more than a state of drowsiness during which the deer still remains aware of its surroundings.
At times, however, the state of sleep can be deeper with the animal having relaxed muscles, reduced breathing and an inability to recognise external stimuli. This only tends to occur during daylight hours.
